The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to suspend new registrations for external degree courses in the arts.
Prof. Sampath Amaratunga, Chairman of the University Grants Commission, said that steps have been taken to appoint an expert committee to study existing subjects and introduce new subjects under the External Degree in Arts.
Prof. Sampath Amaratunga stated that a new curriculum will be introduced for external degree courses in the future with a focus on employment.
This decision has been taken as the existing curricula related to the subject of Arts have not been updated for a long time and as a result many students have turned to studying only a few subjects.
However, registration for other external degree courses, including management and science, conducted by Sri Lankan universities has not been suspended, he said.
